Bernard Eugene Curtis was born on August 31, 1945, in Upper Marlboro, MD to Thomas and Emma Curtis.  Raised in the family home on Valley Lane, Bernard attended elementary school at Saint Mary of the Assumption Church in the Town of Upper Marlboro.  He graduated from Frederick Douglass Junior/Senior High School, and then attended Prince George's College.

Bernard was drafted in December, 1966, and a few months later, was sent overseas to fight in Vietnam.  On July 2, 1966, after only three weeks in the country, Private First Class Bernard Eugene Curtis, United States Army, was killed in action.  He is buried at the Mount Carmel Cemetery on Old Marlboro Pike in Upper Marlboro, Maryland.
