Our History

Bertha "Alene" Curtis

After the death of both of her parents, Alene took on the major task of raising two of her siblings, Doris and Joy. Alene was also the favorite Aunt to many of her nieces, nephews and cousins because she would teach them how to cook and sew. But most importantly, she was the one that would play “hide and go seek”, dodge ball, snow ball fights and softball. It was always a great time, when you were good and she was in charge. But, don’t get it confused, she was also the disciplinarian and ruled with an iron fist. She was also well accomplished in her career. Alene was the first PG county African American female Deputy Sheriff; first PG County African American female Sergeant and the first African American Female Lieutenant for the PG County Correctional Facility.
